Over a hundred people from the SLA community, including staff, alumni and program participants in the current Sydney Leadership and the Headland Indigenous leadership programs came together at Belvoir Street Theatre in Sydney on Friday 8 October for a performance of the acclaimed play, Namatjira, by community-based production company, Big hART. The performance was followed by a special discussion for SLA with cast and crew. Writer-director Scott Rankin spoke about the notion of ‘nations as narrations’ and the importance of story in the role of leadership and a lively discussion ensued. Look out for more SLA community events in 2011.
Senior leaders from 23 major corporations, non-profits and government departments were amongst the participants of the 12th Sydney Leadership program who graduated at a ceremony at The Benevolent Society on 19th November 2010. A record 518 people discovered a new approach to leadership in one of 23 open, customised and issues-based programs delivered by Social Leadership Australia in 2010.
From our Headland emerging Indigenous leadership initiative to our work with senior police and high talent leaders at NAB, SLA was delivering across four states and territories throughout the year. In November we began teaching senior Government executives through the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) in Melbourne and we were in the UK teaching a Social Leadership module for senior NAB executives from London and New York.
Our first successful Queensland Leadership program graduated in July and the two-year Alice Springs Desert Leadership program—a partnership with Desert Knowledge Australia—kicked off in May.
An open breakfast workshop in Brisbane to discuss leadership lessons in the context of the recent Queensland floods offered a taste of what's to come from Social Leadership Australia (SLA).
Forty people including staff from SLA, Queensland Leadership program participants, alumni and members of the community shared their experience of the devastating events at the event on 9 February —the first of SLA's new series of open workshops providing a space for reflection and learning for people both from SLA programs and beyond.
Hosted by Jennifer Cullen—CEO of Synapse (formerly the Brain Injury Association) and Queensland Leadership 2009-2010 alumnus—the breakfast provided an opportunity to examine responses to the dramatic events and explore what is required of leaders in a crisis, using SLA’s leadership methodology. In addition to our annual Sydney Leadership, Queensland Leadership and Introduction to Adaptive Leadership Intensive programs this year there are a number of new programs, events and opportunities to get involved at Social Leadership Australia in 2011:
* We’ll be opening up our breakfast events to everyone who’s interested in attending (as we did with the first Queensland Leadership Breakfast Workshop session in Brisbane on 9 February). These kick off next Friday 4 March in Sydney with our UK-Australia cross-cultural breakfast workshop on Leadership in a Time of Crisis & Change.
* A special community leadership program to be delivered as part of The Benevolent Society’s Growing Communities Together project will kick off in Sydney’s Bankstown in March.
* A new six-day masterclass for senior leadership development and change practitioners will be offered for the first time in June.
* We’ll be working with the Indigenous Dialogue & Policy Research Unit at the UNSW on a new national project called The Australian Dialogue in the lead-up to the referendum on the recognition of the nation’s first people in the constitution. MORE >
